The unemployment rate in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region rose to 6.5 percent in July.
The rate is up two-tenths of a percentage point from 6.3 in June. In July 2016, the rate was 7.3 percent.
The rate rose as unemployment increased by 141 in July to 7,587. However, unemployment claims were down by 292, or 15.2 percent, to 1,623. Claims were down in manufacturing. Over the year, claims were down by 47, or 2.8 percent, from 1,670 in July 2016.
“There were 2,256 more Heart of Georgia-Altamaha area residents employed than in July 2016,” said Commissioner Butler. “I’m pleased to see we have more people in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region employed and contributing to Georgia’s continued environment of economic opportunity.”
Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 1,117 new active job postings in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha area for July.
